Morrilleros are a breed of Spanish Pouter. For a Pouter, they have a very small crop. They have a very unique flying style. The head and neck sticks up and back and the tail is angled down like a Spanish tile. The wings move as if the bird is rowing a boat through the sky. On the ground they put on an awesome show when displaying. The chest, neck and head are bent backwards. Giving the appearance of colorful arrogance -- full of "Spanish flair." The wings are held slightly below the tail. It seems as if their structure and personality is built to compliment their display. They remind me of a colorful Spanish matador playing to the crowd. Only the Spaniards could create the embodiment of machismo and charisma in a pigeon! In his book "Vuelo en Celo del Palomo Buchón Español", Jesús Manuel Ruiz López describes them as being very effective workers, with a good homing instinct and good conservation instincts, capable fliers, frequently checking if the other bird is following on the journey home. It's an extremely rare breed in the United States. See this video. You will need QuickTime to view it. This is the breed standard in Spanish |
