Rafeño Pouter Standard

General Aspect: The Rafeño presents a roundish figure, perhaps because of the combination between the shortness of its tarsi, the width of its chest and body, and the roundness of its breast and belly. Also the Rafeño is a very arrogant bird, and a very gentle one, and it possesses the greatest power of seduction. The cock, when courting, struts gracefully after the hen, cooing frequently, hopping towards her without touching her (except at the peak of his heat, in which he will push her very gently with his chest). He parades in this fashion for only a short time and, quite soon, is calling the hen to his nest. When lowering its head to 'coo', the Rafeño also lowers its tail a little although without frizzling the feathers of its rump (known as rabadilla or albardilla). The Rafeño's feather is plentiful, and that of the crop is loose and very smooth, covering the wing butts. (20pts)

Head: Small and wide; well proportioned and seemingly square. The nape should not protrude and the forehead , which should have the same width as the nose cere, is broad and appears somewhat sunken between the eyes. The feathers covering the skull are tight, short and smooth.(20pts)

Eyes: Red (bull in white birds), surrounded by a pale yellow, smooth eye cere of medium size.(10pts)

Beak: Extremely short and thick, with its upper part curved without overlapping ('hawk beak' is undesirable). (10pts)

Nose Cere: Wide and of medium size (bigger preferred), having the same width as the forehead. It must be smooth although a certain rugosity may be allowed in older birds. It extends from one side of the mouth to the other, forming an arch. (10pts)

Chin Wattles: Ideally, the Rafeño should have three, well differentiated chin wattles , the middle one being a little larger. One wattle by itself (the middle one) is also permitted, and even the absence of chin wattles is allowed in this breed. (5 pts)

Crop: Low hanging, although without touching the ground, the Rafeño's crop is of medium size, pear shaped and creased. The crease runs vertically from the base of the beak and it is covered with frilled feathers which grow towards the inside. (10 pts)

Back, Wings & Tail: The back is flat and of medium size, ending in a rump which is somewhat big and well covered with feathers. In harmony with the body, the Rafeño's wings are of medium size, resting on the tail without crossing. The tail, medium sized as well, has wide feathers. (5pts)

Legs: Thick and short, somewhat apart and featherless. The thigh feathers are very loose, forming what are known as 'canastilla', or 'basket' feathers. The nails, half the size of a wheat kernel, should be the same colour as the beak. (5 pts)

Feather Color: All colors are allowed, the least frequent colors being preferred. Black, dun, blue and white are the most usual colors. (5pts)

Defects to be penalized: Long beak; dropped wings; long, thin legs; poor eye color; small crop; narrow head.

Band size: 8mm
